"/c/cs323/Hwk1/fiend -depth -o -a -depth" results in "fiend: -a with no left operand". Is the fact that an error was found with the -a first rather than -o important/matter for this assignment, or is this just something that arises from your specific implementation? Also, how does one respond to messages from the newsletter? Is that done by replying to the message in one's email client or are you the only one able to respond?
