Subject: hamming code overall parity

Is the overall parity p_0 extending hamming code used to keep the sum of all parity bits odd, or the sum of all parity and data bits odd? I thought it's the latter, but reading your answer on previous question about "overall parity being bad means the overall parity + parity bits is even" led me to think it's the former case. I'd appreciate the clarification!
