What is the expected output on a ctrl-d while inputting a line?

If I am inputting into line (1): "sdf", and then hit ctrl-d after typing sdf, the output on the staff solution is "(1)$ sdf>> sdf(2)$" in one single line. Does our output have to do the same, or does it just need to end gracefully?
